David Fizdale is the new head coach of the New York Knicks, but he has yet to fill out a staff. At least we know Kurt Rambis won’t be a part of it!
There is, however, another prominent former Lakers player who might be in line for an assistant position under Fizdale: Nick Van Exel. Per The Daily News’ Stefan Bondy:
David Fizdale has said he’s just starting to build his staff but among the assistants expected on board is Nick Van Exel, multiple sources told the Daily News.
Van Exel, a former All-Star with the Lakers, was an assistant under Fizdale in Memphis. Keith Smart, another Grizzlies assistant coach, is also expected to join Fizdale’s staff.
Van Exel was a one-time All-Star as a point guard before transitioning to coaching following retirement. Smart has been a head coach on three different teams—Cavaliers, Warriors, Kings—compiling a 93-170 overall record. That looks like Rambis results without the Triangle zealotry. Ah well.
For what it’s worth, Van Exel has seemingly denied any impending deal on Twitter.
Just rumors my folks.
