They're back for another practice.

Today's another joint Knicks/BayHawks practice in Westchester. As was the case Tuesday, the Knicks have given the Erie bros a court at the practice facility and sent Amar'e Stoudemire, James White, and Chris Copeland over there to scrimmage with them. It's the same deal as it was earlier in the week: all three guys are "assigned" to the BayHawks (White and Cope technically had to be "re-assigned", since they were on New York's active roster last night), but none are expected to actually play for Erie. It's just another chance for Stoudemire to test his knee in some full-court run and for White and Cope to do the same while giving Amar'e some extra support/competition. Regardless of how Stoudemire feels following the second scrimmage, Mike Woodson doesn't expect him back by this weekend (Which is fine, right? Don't rush). In the meantime, Amar'e dunked, so that's cool. He also hit a "sweet turnaround". You can just keep checking Nate Taylor's Twitter for live updates on Amar'e's scrimmage. Or Berman's, I suppose.

In other practice news:

- Steve Novak has apparently recovered enough from his flu-like symptoms to practice. Welcome back, Steve.

- Iman Shumpert was cleared for conditioning drills and ran those with the BayHawks this afternoon. No contact, no basketball, but still an important step in the Reshumpification.

- Rasheed Wallace: Still hobblin' around in a boot.

Excellent. All good things. I'm about to leave for a little while, but I'll add some updates if there are any to add post-practice.

Hooray!

Excellent news! During pre-game availability this evening, Mike Woodson announced that Amar'e Stoudemire, out since his knee surgery in October, has been cleared to practice in full, and will be ready to play as soon as he's logged some practice hours. Al Iannazzone:

Amare will practice Thursday too either with D-League team or Knicks. Has to make it thru practices before he can play.

Initially, I was all like "uhh...why ship his ass to Erie? Don't they have a basketball team that plays in New York? Doesn't Woodson himself coach it?". The answer:

Reason Amare is practicing with D-League team because Knicks may not have full practice tomorrow.

Not wasting any time. Excellent. After Stoudemire gets some practice in (including some with his actual teammates) he could potentially return as soon as this weekend. No word yet on what his role/allotment of minutes would be upon returning, but I imagine Woodson will work him back gradually.

Cool. Terrific. Can't wait to have you back, Amar'e.

This confirms previous reports.

Well, Chris Broussard's sources were gracious enough to leak this information during the hurricane, but, as promised, the Knicks have finally made their announcement. Via Howard Beck:

Knicks just announced that Amare Stoudemire needs "left knee debridement" and is out approx. 6-8 weeks.

Debridement, as far as I can tell, is a surgical procedure wherein they'll root around Amar'e's knee with an arthroscope, then take out a bunch of dead shit that isn't supposed to be there (dead human matter, presumably, but one never knows. Could be some jellyfish). I guess this kind of thing-- arthritis, that is-- is to be expected in someone with such a history of knee troubles, but the timing of this procedure is less than ideal what with the basketsports starting in a few days.

Just to recap, this rapidly went from "sore knee, day-to-day" to "exploded knee cyst, a few weeks" to "getting a second opinion, possibly surgery???" to "nope, no biggie, maybe just a few more weeks" to "yup, surgery, two months". The Knicks are pretty good at making injury stories-- which are already the least fun-- that much more torturous. Again, I can only imagine how disheartening this has been for Amar'e after he such a positive, recuperative summer. I hope we'll see you again soon, big friend.

Oh come on.

Here, Chris Broussard said a thing about Amar'e Stoudemire:

Amare Stoudemire to miss at least 1st 6 weeks of season with knee injury, according to league sources. Knicks expected to announce tomorrow

Okay. Can a source just cut to the chase and get us the man's season-ending stats? This whole ordeal must be so frustrating for Amar'e.

Anyway, hurricane. Please take care yourselves and yours' selves. I hope you're all in good shape. Cool timing, sources.

It was pretty much the same as the first one, thankfully.

I was part of the group that kinda freaked out when news broke that Amar'e Stoudemire was seeking a second opinion on his knee injury, so it's funny that I didn't notice Nate Taylor's follow-up until our own prfella pointed it out today. Anyway, there is no further bad news, at least for now:

Dr. Thomas Carter, whom Stoudemire consulted for a second opinion on the ruptured cyst in his left knee, mainly agreed with the Knicks’ medical staff: Stoudemire should be healthy by roughly the end of November

Carter’s assessment of Stoudemire’s knee matched most of what the Knicks thought in terms of the severity of the injury and how long it would take to heal, said Happy Walters, Stoudemire’s agent. But Walters used the phrase "several more weeks" in describing what Carter felt should be the appropriate length of Stoudemire’s rehabilitation. The Knicks initially said Stoudemire would return to the team within two to three weeks.

So yeah, the expected recovery time is longer than the two to three weeks we were initially told, but I doubt any of us took the Knicks at their word anyway. There's no question that Amar'e's knee issues are chronic and unlikely to disappear entirely, but this particular issue is still viewed (and by someone other than the Knicks, at that) as something that can be handled in a month or less. Cool.

Poop.

As is the case every time I leave my computer for a few hours, some new, weird shit is going on with Amar'e Stoudemire. So far, this is only coming from Frank Isola, so do with the information what you will, but here's the report:

Stoudemire is consulting with Phoenix Suns orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Carter, according to a Suns source. Dr. Carter performed microfracture surgery on Stoudemire's left knee in 2005. It is customary, and in some cases encouraged by teams, that players get a second opinion from an independent physician.

The Knicks team doctors discovered that Stoudemire suffered a ruptured cyst on his left knee during last week's exhibition game against the Toronto Raptors. The timetable given by the Knicks for Stoudemire's return is two to four weeks but the same source says a more plausible timetable is four to five weeks.

A four or five week recovery doesn't really faze me-- I presumptively double any timetable the Knicks announce anyway. What's slightly ominous is the prospect of Stoudemire reconvening with the man who, when they last met, poked a hole in Amar'e's knee and sidelined him for a year. (Well, maybe that's not the last time they met. Maybe basketball players go rock climbing with their orthopedic surgeons in the offseason).

(Oh, and a side note: Just hire that doctor. Amar'e Stoudemire is under contract for three more seasons. If there exists on this planet a knee expert better than anyone the Knicks employ, just buy him.)

Oh well. This still has the potential to be nothing, or at least nothing more than what we already knew. Historically, though, things involving Amar'e's knees tend not to be nothing. You know?

Update: Ian Begley:

I can confirm that Amare Stoudemire will go for a 2nd opinion on his left knee injury. Timetable for return uncertain. Daily News had it 1st

Update (7:15 PM): Marc Berman makes this sound way less scary:

Dammit.

Aw, hell. I just returned home from Montreal, only to learn that Amar'e Stoudemire's knee troubles are worse than we were originally told. Via Marc Berman:

Amar’e Stoudemire left the Knicks on Sunday to get an MRI that revealed a ruptured cyst on the back of his left knee. The affliction is known as a Baker’s cyst or popiteal.

Stoudemire will be out two to three weeks and miss the season opener in Brooklyn on Nov. 1.

"He was having discomfort last night in Albany, so we sent him home," coach Mike Woodson said.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, Amar'e's had a cyst chilling in his knee for quite some time, but only recently did it rupture and cause him a lot of pain. I have no idea how or if that's connected to what they were calling a "bone bruise" before, but perhaps someone with some medical knowledge can explain. The cyst does sound like something pretty likely in a patient with recurring knee problems. The medical staff must have already known about it, right? Right??

Two to three weeks isn't the end of the world, but goddamn, man. It's just one thing after another with these Knicks, and with Amar'e in particular. One can only hope (and again, someone in the know could help us gauge this) that this isn't the first in another long line of recurring injuries. Feel better, big friend.

In the meantime, at least Kurt Thomas has been looking pretty solid during the preseason, and at least we know Carmelo Anthony can do nice things shifted up to the power forward spot. (And at least Ronnie Brewer's ready to go.)
