The Knicks will miss Melo for the second straight game.

We've got our Carmelo Anthony update, this time more than a few minutes before tip-off. He will not play, and is hoping to return tomorrow night against Denver. A little detail via Ian Begley:

It's Carmelo's left, non-shooting, finger that's hurt. He said the biggest challenge is catching passes. Stitches should be out in a week.

Raymond Felton throws those passes hard, you know.

So, hopefully tomorrow. We'll see what they can do tonight without him.

He'll test his left hand out again before game time.

Good morning. Here's a Carmelo Anthony update. He's a player on the Knicks. His hand is still stitched up following a laceration on his left middle finger this past Wednesday. He did not participate in the Knicks' shootaround this morning in Chicago, and the beat writers in the building suspect he won't play tonight:

Just bumped into Carmelo in hallways of United Center. Since test of the team is on the court for morning shoot I'd guess he's not playing

Mike Woodson says Melo will make a game-time decision, just like he did on Friday in Miami:

Woodson says Melo is a game-time decision. Says it's Melo's decision and 'there's no need to rush'. Melo didn't workout this AM. <s>#</s>Knicks

Woodson's already earned a reputation for delaying lineup clarity until the last possible second, so even if Melo had already decided to sit, I don't think he'd reveal anything. That said, perhaps Melo will, indeed, test the hand out again before tip-off to see if it's healed enough to play sports. Chicago's a much, much tougher defensive team than the Heat are these days-- particularly against the three-pointer-- so the Knicks will probably miss Melo more than they did on Friday, should he sit. Still not worth risking a reopened wound, if that's what's on the line. We shall see.

He's questionable for Saturday's game in Chicago.

The Knicks' three-game road trip ends tomorrow night in Chicago. Their four-games-in-five-nights stretch ends the following night at home against Denver. Carmelo Anthony's availability for those games, what with the laceration on his left middle finger, is still questionable. Mike Woodson went on a radio show and said he trusts Melo to make the call himself, while Tyson Chandler-- who reportedly encouraged Anthony to sit out the last game-- was a little more dogmatic:

"It's just important that he gets some scar tissue before he comes back," Chandler said. "I think he shouldn't come back until we get back to New York. But we'll see how his finger heals."

I'm with Dr. Chandler. If he feels ready and the finger-hole's closed up enough, then go for it. If not, take another night off and return at home against the Nuggets (a game I'm pretty certain Melo wouldn't skip if his finger was skinned to the bone). After last night, I trust that Melo won't try any hero shit in Chicago if he's still worried about the wound. Cool.

After missing the last few minutes of New York's win in Charlotte, Melo is expected to return tomorrow.

Hey. You can watch video of J.R. Smith's preposterous game-winning jumper here and I'll begin working on the recap immediately, but first, an update on Carmelo Anthony. Melo had to leave the game after diving (unnecessarily, but still cool) into the stands after a loose ball and hurting his hand.

We all feared something awful, but it turned out be just a deep cut on his left middle finger (Tina Cervasio reported that Melo left "a trail of blood" heading to the locker room). The update now is that Melo got either five or six stitches in the finger (differing reports. 5.5 stitches, perhaps?) and will play tomorrow against the Heat.

It's so very, very relieving that Melo's okay-- that cut may still affect his shot, but it can't really be worse than it was in the second half tonight-- and pretty cool that the Knicks were able to pull off the win without him.

Update: Melo himself told reporters he's not positive he'll be able to play tomorrow, so we'll see.
