It doesn't sound like they did much practicing-- if any-- on Saturday.

The Knicks just finished up practice at UCLA. The updates on Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler are scant. First of all, both have been deemed "questionable" for Sunday's game against the Clippers:

Melo was supposed to test his knee out this afternoon. It sounds like he did that, but didn't stick around to describe his progress to reporters. The overall sense seems to be that neither will play Sunday, and that's what Mike Woodson is presuming.

Like Joe said earlier, I'm fine with that. Better to get extra rest than to push for a game the Knicks probably aren't going to win anyway. I just continue to hope the Anthoknee and the...uh...Tysoknee(?) will be okay long-term. Beyond Melo getting his drained, we haven't heard that they will be. We haven't heard that they won't be. We haven't heard much at all.

Finally.

Well, it took long enough, but after struggling to play through a game and a half on a badly swollen knee, Carmelo Anthony flew back to New York and got the thing taken care of.
Good. Bizarre medical politics aside, I'm glad Melo got over whatever apprehension or obstinance was keeping that knee soup in place. With the pressure and stiffness in his knee relieved, Melo can hopefully get back to producing soon, be that Sunday in Los Angeles, Monday in Utah, or back East sometime next week. This seems to be a chronic condition, not an acute structural injury, and the knee may require more draining in the future. One hopes Anthony and the Knicks won't dawdle next time the issue arises. Melo does his team very little good when his legs don't work right.

Knees!

The game has ended and the injury updates are now rolling in. First, we have good (if not quite concrete, these being the Knicks) news regarding Tyson Chandler:

Of course, these evaluations are being made without the use of MRI/x-ray/any sort of medical technology beyond the following:

Listen, I know next to nothing about how NBA organizations function, but this seems way the hell off. Melo just played 56 minutes on a stiff, fluid-filled knee. Why? Because he's afraid of needles? Because he really wanted to play in his return to Denver? And now Tyson has the power to waive an MRI and declare himself ready for the second of a back-to-back just because he's a badass? How is this even remotely acceptable?

I mean, I respect the toughness and urge to fight through injury and I'll acknowledge again that I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, but...what the fuck? Melo says he was being naive, but you know who isn't-- or at least shouldn't be-- naive? Doctors. The Knicks employ real doctors with medical degrees who, unless the chain of command is seriously gnarly here, have the power-- the obligation!-- to say "nuh-uh, guy. If you're scared of needles then you can nuzzle a teddy bear while we jam a crazy straw into your patella. This isn't an option."

And then with Tyson: He doesn't want his knee examined? Tough shit! Get this man in an MRI tube and make damn sure he's right before you let him back on the floor. These are grown men with autonomy over their own bodies, but they're also multi-jillion dollar investments. Coaches can tell them how to play, executives can tell them where to play, and I'm pretty sure doctors are supposed to be able to tell them when to play. At best, the proper measures are being taken behind closed doors and this is another in a long list of examples of the Knicks failing miserably to communicate with the public. At worst, they're completely fucked. Seriously, if I'm missing something about how this stuff should work, clue me in.

But yeah, I hope Tyson's right and that he's totally fine. I'm not actually that worried about him after these updates. It's more about the process. And while the Knicks are going to be hard-pressed to win in Portland without Melo, he wasn't adding much with all that juice in his knee. Flying home to get tests and drainage sounds like a wise move, and hopefully it starts him on the path to being as healthy as possible. He wasn't previously on that path, and that's pretty weird to me.

Anthony has been hampered by a knee injury.

Carmelo Anthony exited Monday's game early because of a tumble/flare-up of a knee injury that had reportedly been bothering him for a little while. He'll have the knee looked at again before Wednesday's game against the Pistons, but here's the official-est update we're gonna get for now:

So, the Knicks still can't or won't tell us why the right knee is stiff/sore, but it is those things. As far as we know, Melo had an MRI a few days ago, but hasn't had one since taking that weird fall during the second quarter in Cleveland. As we speak, the Knicks are rubbing the knee with a Magic Eight Ball.

My guess, since you were totally asking for one, is that Melo won't play in Detroit. Let us pray (and/or sacrifice a couple lambs to the basketball gods) this isn't anything serious.

Update: On the radio just now, Glen Grunwald suggested Melo's status is uncertain for <strike>Friday</strike> Thursday against Oklahoma City, so I definitely don't expect him to play tomorrow. Not serious, though...

His availability for Wednesday is uncertain.

It was tough to know what to make of Carmelo Anthony's knee injury right after it happened. After appearing to trip over his own foot, Melo crumpled to the floor, then walked unassisted into the locker room, where he remained for the rest of the game. During the game, Tina Cervasio reported a "sore right knee". We now have some updates from Melo himself:

We will see indeed. That the injury is a preexisting thing is-- in this instance--somewhat of a relief, since those occasions when someone falls and complains of knee pain without any apparent impact make me instinctively go "AHHH ACL ACL ACL NOOOO". On the other hand, a chronic knee issue isn't very good either. This, thankfully, doesn't sound like a serious thing, but it might be a small, nagging thing for the foreseeable future.

More updates as they come, plus a recap in the near future.
