<3<3<3<3<3

One of my favorite parts of Carmelo Anthony's historic 62-point game was watching every one of his teammates (give or take Metta World Peace) react like a giddy fan. The Knicks looked like a team last night. They played a nice, cohesive game with with and around Melo, and they looked like they enjoyed each other's company for the first time in weeks. By the end of the game, they were doing (almost) everything in their power to make sure he made history. It was sweet. All the post-game stuff reflected that, too. Here's a lovely pile of tweets:

62!

That was perfect. That was like showing up for a funeral to find a pizza party instead. The vibe heading into tonight's game-- a Friday night against the troublesome Bobcats after ten straight days of losing-- could not have been bleaker. The Knicks playing as vivaciously as they did as a team would have been enough to turn the mood around for a night, but we got more than enough. We got 62!

The stakes kept raising and Carmelo Anthony just kept on cooking soup. Against a defender who'd bottled him up this season in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, against full-fledged double teams, against tired legs and decades of history, Melo reached the summit. Those glassy eyes and pursed lips always tell you Melo's feeling something, but you never know how much. It was such a thrill to go from "oh man, he's having one of those quarters" to "oh man, he's on pace for a career-high" to that half-court buzzer-beater to "oh shit, Kobe and King are going down" from one quarter to the next. And in case you weren't paying attention: Melo's 62 was indeed the greatest scoring performance in Knicks history AND the greatest scoring performance in Madison Square Garden history. Magic.

The Knicks have sucked for three months. They may suck for another three. I could not care less right now. This 62 is ours and Melo's forever. Thank you.

And...now this stuff starts to count.

Hey, I'm glad that game didn't count, because if that game did count, it would have been a game in which the Knicks lost to the Bobcats! And they played a fairly normal rotation and tried and stuff, too. The Knicks had some beautiful moments of passing and three-shooting and even defending, but all the starters besides Iman Shumpert shot poorly and the three-pointers dried the hell up in the second half. Once it got close in crunch time, the Knicks just kept losing track of Kemba Walker off the dribble, which is probably something to keep in mind.

Kenyon Martin, Amar'e Stoudemire, and J.R. Smith each made their preseason debuts in the new Garden's basketball debut, and they all looked pretty nimble out there. They actually played some of the most productive minutes of, well...any of the Knicks.

So yeah, didn't count, but it would have been nice to see a pretty realistic group of Knicks beat the shorthanded Bobcats. Oh well. Recap in the morning!
