9 PM Seth came very close to starting this recap early. 9 PM Seth already had in mind some trite nonsense he was gonna say about the game, like "sometimes you can't, sometimes you won't, and sometimes you can't and won't at the same time." I pity 9 PM Seth, but I'm also very glad he's dead.

The Knicks game 9 PM Seth had seen was pretty bleak. New York couldn't stop anything amid the Jazz screening frenzy, and even when they shot well, failed to match Utah in any "easy point" department. They didn't get out in transition, they didn't get to the line, and they didn't get putbacks. When the buckets dried up for 5 minutes in the second quarter, Utah took a double-digit lead and just kinda cruised from there. The Knicks kept gnawing off some of the lead, only to watch the Jazz get points off a tough jumper or some garbage foul call. I can't blame 9 PM Seth for throwing up his hands and setting himself up for an early post-stinker bedtime. The game, I mean. The game was a stinker. I don't generally poop before bed.

And then boom, opposite day. The Knicks started contesting jumpers and walling off the rim. Carmelo Anthony ruled the baselines, both as a driver and a shifty-eyed passer. Robin Lopez tipped home anything that fell off the rim. They got a few calls of their own. Arron Afflalo and Langston Galloway appeared to put the game away with a couple threes off Melo lasers, but the Jazz stayed hot, and the tender stalk they call Kristaps got caught overreacting to a Gordon Hayward pump fake, sending him to the line for three game-tying free throws. 10 PM Seth thought the Knicks had wasted a riveting comeback, but the game only improved in extra time. Melo stayed magical, Lopez put the bow on his domination of Rudy Gobert with a crisp lefty hook, and Derrick Williams made the inarguable play of the night, which I will show you now even though I put it in the last post:

It's funny that Sleepy Derrick Who Drops Easy Passes and Maniacal Derrick Who Earns Three Points With Sheer Will can exist in the same game, but that kinda typifies this night. The Knicks woke up and fortune's pendulum swung in their favor all at once, and the timing could not have been better. Just a few notes before we dig into some stuff tomorrow:

- Any of us could have called a big Robin Lopez performance tonight. Since he's hit his stride over the last month or two, his best match-ups have been rim-dwelling big men, the kind who can quieted by a guy insistent on hanging back, holding his ground, and boxing out every carom. When the guards were a-leakin', Lopez couldn't help but allow some sneakin' by Rudy Gobert, but mostly kept him off the offensive glass and obstructed easy lobs. And so, so many hooks the other way. Putbacks, too. Watching Lopez realize he can be an actual offensive option -- a carnivore, not just a scavenger -- has been one of the great delights of this whole season.

- Gordon Hayward can cook Melo, and things weren't looking so hot after the first half. But as Melo told Chris Herring, he guarded Hayward more sensibly in the second half, and did so while stoking a goddamn inferno on offense. After logging 50 minutes on a bum ankle Monday, Melo worked himself into a very encouraging groove. His first steps actually propelled him through the trees and up to the rim, and his jabby jumpers looked very clean. The three crosscourt passes in the fourth and OT -- one for Afflalo, one for Galloway, one for Williams -- damn near had me in tears. It's not just that he's made those passes, but that he orchestrated the opportunities. He waited, he communicated, he feinted, and he threw *THE* pass, not just *a* pass. Over and over again. It's crazy that Melo hasn't quite put together a triple-double this season, and it's crazy that that's crazy.

- The crowd seemed understandably a little petulant early in the game. The Knicks were playing poorly, and fouls kept disrupting any momentum. It was wonderful, then, to hear organic "defense" chants, "DER-RICK WIL-LIAMS" chants (!), and a hearty cheer when one ref took a tumble late in the game.

- Quietly, Derek Fisher turned back to his shorter, happier rotation. Sasha Vujacic played just 2 patch minutes. Kyle O'Quinn only played a stretch of the second quarter. Even with extra time and serious foul trouble, it was basically an 8-man rotation.

- I gotta look at this again once it's online and I'm not falling asleep, but Derek Fisher had some fun with sets late in the game, and I thought I saw him mimic one of Utah's double-pick sets for a Langston Galloway bucket. The Jazz blew plenty of stuff up (like the last-second-of-regulation back screen play that devolved into an awful Melo runner), but Fisher gave the Knicks solid, varied plans.

- Props to the Jazz for never sinking, man. They just kept slinging buckets right up to the end. After Rodney Hood or whoever kept them in it with the 399th straight jumper, Clyde came right out and said "this is no longer funny." It is jarring and meaningful when Clyde describes a turn of events with anything other than a signature phrase. That was genuine exasperation and I cherished it.

The Knicks could have easily succumbed to adversity and random shit. I wouldn't have been that mad at them for it. It happens. But like The Ghost of Kristaps Past said, they overcame it, and it amounted to one of the most exciting games of the season. The schedule ahead gets pretty choppy, so that's a big win. Thanks for recovering, Knicks. Rest in peace 9 PM Seth.

This post is the post where I show you, instead of tell you, what happened in the Knicks game, so here you go. Here's the first 3 quarters:

The Knicks couldn't make shots, they couldn't get stops, and each time they finally did both of those things in sequence, they got called for some kind of arcane "breathing near ballhandler" foul. It was frustrating, and it felt like one of those occasional snow globes of flakiness and random variance that every team must go through a few times out of 82. Those losses happen.

And then here's some video from after the third quarter:

Carmelo Anthony got a heap of late buckets and made no fewer than 3 brilliant crosscourt passes for late buckets. Robin Lopez finished a season-topping performance with several tip-ins and one deadly hook. Derrick Williams and Langston Galloway each made up for boners with some huge buckets, the best of which was the Williams multi-tap above. I fist-pumped so hard I nearly clipped off my ear.

With all of that, the Knicks finally cut into the lead they'd allowed with a dead mid-second quarter. They pulled ahead late with those big Melo plays, but because the Jazz wouldn't miss, and because poor, sweet Kristaps Porzingis bit on a pump fake and gave Gordon Hayward three late free throws, the game went to overtime. And it just got better! The Jazz refused to go away, but New York finally outworked 'em with stops, great work on the offensive glass, and the necessary free throws.

It was so bad, and then it was so great. Recap to come!

Good evening! The Knicks are back to basketball-playing tonight. It's the Jazz paying them a visit -- the same Jazz who absolutely crushed New York a month ago. Utah's been pretty wild and unpredictable since, not unlike New York, so who knows what'll happen tonight. This has been a very analytical preview.

Health stuff! Kristaps Porzingis is playing despite missing a bunch of the last game after banging his foot. Here's what they say about him:

Well uhhhh, I'll just choose to not worry about any of the above and we'll go from there. Kevin Seraphin is also available, by the way, though he's dealing with a bruised rib. For the Jazz:

That was fun.

Early in tonight's broadcast of the Knicks versus Utah, MSG showed footage of Derek Fisher's time as a player for the Jazz, focusing on the emotional return Fisher made to a Utah playoff game after his year-old daughter had surgery for cancer behind her eye. Kenny Albert casually mentioned how Fisher then went on to return to the Lakers, totally glossing over the ugliness that erupted from an enraged Jazz fan base toward Our Fearless Leader. Basically, Albert dug up an indigenous burial ground and dumped the bodies in the pet cemetery off the highway on the edge of town where the dead come back to life, then built a white picket-fence suburb on top of the old burial ground. The Knicks were cursed. And they played like it.

New York fell behind fast and hard. Their offense was all sloppy passes and bumbled passes, the defense a curious, constant compulsion to continually go under screens and give up threes that the Jazz kept hitting. Utah got any and all penetration they wanted, off the dribble or off the pass. If the shot clock for this game had been 12 seconds instead of 24, the Knicks might've had a chance. This play at the end of the half -- off a Knick basket, for Christ's sake -- sums the night up.

Notes:

- It was 29-11 Utah after the first quarter, the Knicks' low for points in a quarter this year. Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis combined to open 1 of 9 from the field while the rest of the Knicks began at a blistering 28% (4-14 FGs).

- Lowest point of the night #1: trailed 38-11 in the second quarter, the Knicks were 5 of 25 from the field, getting out-rebounded 20-12, and had two assists versus three turnovers. Utah had 11 assists and no turnovers, along with a 32-12 advantage on points in the paint.

- Lowest point of the night #2: In the third, the Knicks fell behind 70-37. That 33-point deficit is their biggest of the year so far.

- After all the Melo/officiating talk, Anthony didn't exactly come out and force the issue, which I thought he may have been setting up, what with 26-year-old rookie ref Gediminas Petraitis working the game. He did get to the line seven times in 26 minutes, but he set the tone settling for jumpers early. By the time he got to the charity stripe, it didn't matter.

- Porzingis came out launching. Hit his first shot off a nice Triangle set. That was the high point of his night. He missed everything after that, committed one of those perimeter fouls he gets one or two of every night, and never got in a groove.

- Your Adam Silver Lining of the Night: Porzingis only played 13 minutes. S'all about the big picture...

- Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward: 17-27 for 44 points. Carzingis: 5-19 for 16.

- I love watching these Jazz play. After Golden State, they're my "ooh they're on TV tonight!" team of this season. They really look like a team, play like five-as-one on both ends. They're like one of those kids who grow up in a family that's so loving and together the functionality actually looks dysfunctional 'cuz so many families aren't anywhere near so functional. Like, I feel like the only reason the Jazz can assemble this exact team is because they play in an enchanted gumdrop forest. Or a cursed indigenous graveyard. Tomato, tomahto.

- I wish I played in the NBA so I could experience firsthand whatever it is that makes Utah such a difficult place to play. For literally decades, going back to the Salt Palace, games in Utah are just a different animal than other arenas.

- At the nadir of last summer's pre-draft rumor mongering, I feared the Knicks' big haul would be Trey Lyles, who ended up on the Jazz. I wanted whichever player had the highest upside, which turned out, luckily, to be KP. But Lyles did look and sound like a guy who could be a solid contributor on a real team, and here he is starting for an ascendant team out west. Six points, 10 boards for the rook.

- Sasha Vujacic had 10 points, 7 assists, and three steals, playing a team-high 27 minutes. He also shhh'd the crow in the fourth, long after the loss was cemented, after missing the first of two free throws but hitting the second, depriving those in attendance of free Chik-Fil-A.

- Apparently they take their free chicken giveaways pretty seriously in Salt Lake City.

Flagrant two by Rodney Hood. Ejected immediately. Vujacic missed the first free throw again. "He's gonna really hear it now," Walt Frazier chuckled. "They want some chicken, baby!" Sasha hit the second. He lost the battle tonight. Not the war. Lou Amundson, non-free throw shooter extraordinaire, lost the fowl war at the foul line late in the fourth. His second attempt was an airball that, even by airball standards, was wretched.

- It's Langston Galloway's birthday. Happy birthday, Langston!

This was, as Philluminati put it, "like ice cubes on your genitals," only in a bad way. Rightlight called it early: "Tonight feels like a Lou Amundson 15 minute game." And it did, early and often (Lou ended up playing 10). This was the Knicks' third straight loss and fifth in their last seven games. Fair to say this is their first gut-check of the year? Tomorrow night's a TNT broadcast in Sacramento. Marv Albert, Chris Webber, and (speaking of gut-check), a certain rotund blowhard Knick-hater will be calling the game. Come get some!

Good evening! The Knicks start a western road trip tonight with a visit to Utah. The Jazz have also arrived back in Salt Lake City recently after losing in Sacramento Tuesday night. The Jazz are okay -- pretty similar to the Knicks, actually, in both the way they play (slow pace, a lot of mid-range) and their overall efficiency numbers. Utah's without Rudy Gobert for a while, so they've been starting Trey Lyles in a smaller lineup alongside the mighty Derrick Favors, with Trevor Booker also in the mix for heavy frontcourt minutes.

I hope the Knicks win. This would constitute a decent win over a non-terrible team, which is something they haven't bagged in a while. After some sloppy, sleepy performances, it'd mean sooo much for them to start this trip on a high note the way they did last time they went west (but maybe finish the trip better this time).

This, by the way, is the first of a back-to-back, as the Knicks will visit Sacramento tomorrow to complete this little round robin.

Tip-off tonight is at 9 PM EST on MSG. This is your game thread. This is SLC Dunk. Please don't post large photos, GIFs, or links to illegal streams in the thread. Please, please be kind and respectful to one another, D.A.R.E. to resist engaging with stupid comments, and just try to relax and enjoy yourself no matter the course of the game. Go the Knicks!

A Shved to remember.

The New York Knicks played a fine, tense game on Tuesday night in Utah. The Jazz ultimately won, 87-82, thanks to some late-game heroics from Rodney Hood and Joe Ingles, but the 'Bockers will leave Salt Lake City with their heads held high after giving a red-hot team all they could handle.

...OK, enough of this crap. The only real drama in this game came from the Alexey Shved Triple-Double Watch.

The point czar started off in a generous mood, feeding Andrea Bargnani for three quick assists. He finished the first half with seven points, seven rebounds and three dimes. The tension mounted as Shved reached a double-double mid-way through the fourth and needed three more assists in the final four minutes to reach immortality.

Alas, it was not to be. Shved did get a critical steal and a few more buckets -- bringing his total to an absurd 21 points (6-12 shooting), 10 rebounds, seven assists, one steal and two blocks -- but he fell short of that random statistical market we so love to celebrate. Better luck next time, young Shved. You may or may not be a good basketball player, but you are certainly too good for this club.

Notes:

-Jason Smith missed a layup off a beautiful Shved feed in the third quarter. He ruins everything.

- Minstrels will travel the land with their lutes in hand and sing of Cole Aldrich's hook shot battle against Rudy Gobert. The Gallic Giant doth swatted Cole's hook with his arms long as the great serpent in the Garden of Eden. Yet verily did gallant Cole, beloved of God, did smite his foe with hooks from the sky like mighty comets of justice.

- Derrick Favors roasted the Knicks frontcourt , particularly in the first half. Lou Amundson has been surprisingly adept on the defensive end, but he isn't really equipped to handle that kind of strength. In Lou's defense, Favors threw in several un-called stiff arms for good measure.

But Amundson, like his top-knotted samurai forebears, did not go down without a fight. He turned the tables on Favors in the third, contesting shots and grabbing rebounds. I enjoy Lou.

- Langston Galloway had his worst game in a while. He sat early with two quick fouls and never seemed to get in rhythm. The clutch Galloway of yore was nowhere to be seen, as he missed a potential game-changing three late, and coughed up a disastrous turnover with less than a minute left to seal the deal. He did, however, took a brutal charge in the first quarter. I appreciate the effort, but youngsters shouldn't really risk bodily harm for this team.

- Say what you want about Andrea Bargnani, but that dude knows how to complete a pass from a seated position. Most big men tend to panic after falling on their tuckus with the ball in their hands. Not Bargs. He remains remarkably composed, scanning the floor like Magic Johnson. You can see the gears turning in his head: Alas, I have yet again fallen on my bottom! Take a deep breath, Andrea...you've been hear before. Wait for Galloway to move clear of Rudy Gobert's knees. Ah, there he is! I am still the maestro of the sit-pass!

- When these Knicks are moving the ball with gusto, it often ends up in the hands of Lance Thomas in the corner...otherwise known as the graveyard of offense. Dude can't shoot, dribble, walk in a straight line while reciting the ABC's or tie his shoes. I appreciate your contributions on defense, Lance, but please learn how to do something with the ball in your hands.

And so the Knicks are 0-2 on this five-game Western Conference odyssey. No reason to let up now, boys!
