They'll need to pull him away from the Lakers first.

The Knicks' press conference to announce the hiring of Derek Fisher will be live at 11:30 AM on MSG (and ESPN and NBA.com, at least in part, from the look of things). I'll watch and keep track of what's said for a post to come. In the meantime, the assistant coaching staff may already be taking shape. Howard Beck tweeted right after Fisher got hired that Kurt Rambis was the likeliest of a slew of Phil Jackson's old Laker friends to join Fisher's staff. Marc Berman seconds the rumor with a source furthering that Rambis will probably become Fisher's top assistant. They'll need to spring him from his previous job first:

Derek Fisher, set to be announced Tuesday as the new coach of the Knicks, is expected to hire triangle offense guru Kurt Rambis as his top assistant, according to a source.

The Knicks already have asked the Lakers for permission to speak with Rambis, who coached Fisher and still is under contract as a Lakers assistant.

Rambis has a yucky head coaching history in Los Angeles and Minnesota, buuuut he's got experience (experience!) and knows Fisher and Jackson and, well, that's pretty much all this new team seeks. Rambis is also a former Knick draft pick-- if never a real Knick because they promptly waived him-- but still, #OAKAAK.

So we'll see where that goes. Either way, I hope you're getting comfortable with the Knicks' staff (and shit, maybe the roster to an extent) turning into a jumbled version of Lakers teams past.

Derek Fisher is getting paid way too much money to coach the Knicks...how much should you not care?

The New York Knicks have a head basketball coach, and his name is <strike>Scrooge McDuck</strike> Derek Fisher.

Many reactions to the announcement of Fisher's hiring focused less on who he is and more on how much he's going to make. There was more than a hint of outrage the veteran point guard could land a five-year, $25 million contract without a whit of coaching experience. He doesn't deserve that kind of deal! He's not worth it!

Deserve. Worth. Interesting words. I doubt anyone would argue that Fisher is worth that kind of deal as a coach. Forget for a moment that a coach's salary doesn't count against the salary cap -- there is, on a basic level, something inherently wrong about giving someone a deal he hasn't earned.

Of course, most of the people complaining about the fairness of Fisher's contract are not Knicks fans. They usually follow other teams, which means they are used to the uniform sense of basketball morality laid down by most of the rest of the league. They have grown up judging contracts based on their real-world, logical value. That sounds like a wonderful world. I wish I could live in that world. But that is not MSG.

The Knicks are owned by the son of one of the richest men in America -- a man who grew up with no concept of value or consequence. He doesn't pay for things based on what they're worth; he pays based on pure, unchecked desire. He doesn't judge employees based on performance; he judges them based on whether or not he likes them personally.

This is the world of the Knicks fan. You must adjust your thinking or lose your mind. There are no more moralist fans, standing fast to their strict codes of right and wrong. If you cared that much about overpaying Fisher, how could you have possibly survived the past 15 years?

There are really only two kinds of Knicks fans that remain. First is the Patty Hurst fans (also known as the Knicks fan police) -- people brainwashed by their captors into defending them against the "haters" no matter what they do. The second group is the pragmatists -- those willing to relax their standards for the sake of their sanity. For the pragmatists, the only questions that matter on this Fisher deal are "Is it as stupid as their previous moves?" and "Is there the slightest possibility this will work?"

Let's stop for a moment and ponder where the Knicks are coming from. In the last 12 months...

The Knicks traded an ungodly amount of draft picks for CAA client Andrea Bargnani, flying in the face of all reason.

Competent GM Glen Grunwald was forced aside in favor of CAA-backed Steve Mills -- a holdover from the dark days of the Anucha Browne-Sanders trial and a man with zero experience running a basketball team.

The organization bent over backwards to accommodate CAA client (and scrub extraordinaire) Chris Smith, which made them even more of a laughingstock.

Mike Woodson, who seemingly tripped over his dick into a winning formula for the Knicks in 2012-13, willfully abandoned that same formula while paying lip service to defense, rebounding, East-bigness and Beno-blaming. The team slipped from 18th in defensive rating to 24th, while putting together some of the worst crunch-time offense in NBA history. The coach, who dumped his longtime agent for CAA the previous year, managed to hold onto his job throughout the season.

Yes, Phil Jackson got a haul for one of "his guys." But Derek Fisher will be held accountable by perhaps the greatest coach in NBA history...not Worldwide Wes and the rhythm section for The Eagles. He will be judged by his ability to build a cohesive, functioning team. It's really hard for me to put too high a price of James Dolan's money on that.

Now, the real financial battle begins. Jackson and Fisher will need to convince Carmelo Anthony to take less money to stay in New York. Some might argue that their high salaries might incur some jealousy in Melo, but I personally don't buy it. The guy is an adult. Besides, would he feel more comfortable taking less money and playing for the Woodson/Mills regime, or two well-compensated, well-respected basketball minds who have a combined 18 rings between them? If Melo's leaving the Knicks, it won't be due to Fisher's bank account.

Before Jackson and Fisher can bring a championship to New York, they must first restore some semblance of sanity. Getting their star forward to buy in at a cap-friendly rate would be the responsible move; letting him walk if he demands the max would be equally responsible. Either way, they will have pulled off the most logical roster decision in recent franchise history.

That's why they get paid the big bucks.

Phil Jackson has his guy.

It is not officially official as of 5 PM Monday (Update: see below), but it is very nearly so according to multiple reports: Derek Fisher will be the next coach of the Knicks. Frank Isola has the first report and Woj has the details:

That's a bunch of money for a guy who wore a jersey just weeks ago, but remember that:

1. This is exactly what Phil Jackson wants-- an inexperienced, familiar guy amenable to being mentored and who will permit a lot of Triangular influence from above. Jackson, as far as we can tell, wants to coach as much as possible without having to travel or pace the sidelines. This is an unorthodox setup, but Fisher has presumably been chosen because he is, among other qualifying attributes, okay with it.

2. There's no salary cap for coaches. Fisher's salary affects nothing but James Dolan's giant sack of gold coins.

Once the Fisher deal is official, the next step is to assemble a staff. And a lot of names familiar to Jackson and anyone who's been paying attention the last few months are candidates:

Fisher's staff is very likely to include Kurt Rambis. Others in mix: Rick Fox, Luke Walton, Bill Cartwright.

I'm excited. I like a new face, and I love the idea of a bond between the lead executive and coach, even if that bond is unusually tight with unclear boundaries. I never liked Fisher, but I reckon the same cleverness and steadiness that made him so annoying as a player could make him a great coach. His growth will surely take some time, but I'm okay with that. LONG LIVE KING FISHER.

Things are "ramping up!"

It didn't take long after the Thunder got eliminated for Derek Fisher to become the Knicks' new Steve Kerr. Phil Jackson wants Fisher as coach, and when Phil Jackson wants a guy as coach, no one else exists (until that guy heads elsewhere and you move down the list). It's not unlike elementary school romance, actually. Here's where things stand with all that.

After last week's phone call, Marc Stein reports the Knicks will "ramp up" their pursuit of Fisher this week, and we're even starting to get vibes that that a deal could get done very soon. The Lakers once looked like the Knicks' competition for Fisher's services, but that seems like less of a match these days, so the primary obstacle is whether or not Fisher wants to stay in his current job as basketball player. Some pretty final-sounding words have been spoken on that topic, but nothing's stopping Fisher from turning back to play another year or two if he pleases. (Side note: If Fisher does take this job and the Knicks don't improve their own guard situation, it'll be funny to watch a guy who might help them on the floor pace the sidelines in a suit.)

If last week's Berman report about Jackson wanting to hire a coach before he heads to Turkey for his son's wedding is to be believed, then the Knicks will probably try to hire Fisher this week. In the meantime, everyone else is getting the stiff arm. Luke Walton's phone isn't ringing, I've seen nothing about previously rumored candidate Tyronn Lue, Bill Cartwright hasn't heard anything since he interviewed to be lead assistant, and Ric--- well, I'm sorry, Rick Fox, but I don't really think you were ever part of this. Please go back to your seat alongside Chris Mihm and Smush Parker.

So, once again, all arrows point at one candidate, and now that candidate is Derek Fisher. The situation with Fisher is nearly identical to the previous situation with Steve Kerr. A Knicks hire seems inevitable, but there is some sideward pull of unknown magnitude. The Warriors seemed to drop out of the Kerr picture right before they lunged back into it, so I hesitate to dismiss the Lakers job or another year as a player until contracts are signed.

Here, I made a chart:

That's pretty much how things are until we're told otherwise. Last time this happened, we got told otherwise, so let's wait and see.

Pretty much.

We've heard Phil Jackson was interested in Derek Fisher as Knicks coach for a while now, even before/during the near-exclusive pursuit of Steve Kerr. The main issue until this weekend was the thing where Fisher was employed as a basketball player and his team was in the playoffs. Fisher's team got fired, though, (or something? I don't know how playoffs work), and he sounds ready to move on to a different job.

Could it be the Knicks' coaching job? It's early yet and Fisher has a lot to consider, but he's definitely into the idea of coaching and expects to at least talk to Jackson and the Knicks about the job. And, since these things don't really warrant our consideration unless the interest is mutual, here's Adrian Wojnarowski with a fresh piece on the Knicks' desire for Fisher:

Knicks president Phil Jackson has been eager to sell Fisher, 39, on the possibility of Jackson mentoring him as part of a direct move from Fisher's playing career into the Knicks head coaching job. Fisher is taking a few days to finalize his thoughts on the likely end of his 18-year playing career before fully engaging in talks to become a head coach.

Nevertheless, the Knicks and Fisher expect conversations to begin before the end of the week, league sources said.

Woj refers to the Knicks as the "frontrunner" for Fisher's services and to Fisher as New York's "top head-coaching target" in the headline. He also mentions the Lakers like everyone else has, but notes that they're more interested in experienced coaches, whereas Jackson seems to be looking for the opposite.

So, basically, Fisher is the new Kerr, and we should get used to hearing about his every whim (Dan put it well). On that note, my response to all this is the same as it was for Kerr: "...sure!" <s>Kerr</s> Fisher seems smart and leader-y and he checks off several of Jackson's preferred qualifications (Namely: 1. Has few 2. Phil already has his phone number). Cool!

Update: And Jackson's already paying for his interest!

And a lot more.

First of all, let us begin this dump of tweet embeds by once again agreeing that it's really nice to have an executive who speaks to the media periodically and actually seems to give forthright, meaningful answers to the questions asked of him. Thanks, Phil Jackson, and thanks, James Dolan, for allowing this basic level of transparency for your new president. Jackson opened today's media availability by telling reporters there was "no news," but he actually said some things. Let's walk through 'em.

Jackson said the most Actual Things regarding Carmelo Anthony's future

Steve Kerr spurned them, so now it's time to act like adults.

A long time ago I heard from a wise man that the Chinese word for "crisis"combines the word "danger" and the word "opportunity," and that sounded like some really deep stuff.

Then I moved to China, lived among Chinese people, and found out that idea was bullshit. You can't just break up the word for crisis -- 危机 (wei-ji) -- into its two component characters willy-nilly. It's one complete word, and it means exactly what you think it means: "Bad stuff is going down."

The New York Knicks find themselves in the midst of the first crisis of the Phil Jackson era, as first-choice head coach candidate Steve Kerr opted for the higher salary, shorter commute and superior roster of the Golden State Warriors.

This feels like a disaster for the Knicks -- not only because every single thing they do is magnified, but because president Jackson (Phil, not Andrew) seemed so convinced that Kerr was his man. Did the Zen Master fail to hypnotize Kerr with his legendary 11 ring juggling trick? Did James Dolan walk into Kerr's house with his muddy cowboy boots and start stomping his feet all over the couch?

I don't exactly buy into the whole "Jackson's aura will attract free agents" deal -- I've been burned too many times by that old con. Players and coaches aren't stupid -- they want to join up with strong, healthy organizations. My real hope for Jackson is that his aura will be enough to overwhelm the juvenile sensibilities of James Dolan, and the awestruck owner will finally give a smart basketball man the kind of leeway he once gave to Isiah Thomas. In that case, the Kerr fiasco was troubling.

But now the real test begins. How will Jackson respond to the first crisis of his tenure?

The Knicks are facing a very public setback, which is traditionally the most dangerous moment for any Dolan-owned team. This franchise has loved nothing more over the years than to react to short-term difficulty with rash, haphazard moves. Fail to sign LeBron to pair with the recently-acquired Amar'e Stoudemire? No problem, we'll trade nearly all of our remaining assets for Carmelo Anthony, despite the fact that he'll be a free agent in a few months. Lose a tough Game 6 in the Eastern Conference semis? Let's change up our third-ranked offense and trade for Andrea Bargnani!

If Phil is going to earn his money, he can start right now, by avoiding the typical Knicks overreaction. The good news is that there seems to be little indication he's going after the obvious target of the old Dolan regime: former Warriors coach Mark Jackson. Now there is a man that just screams out "reactionary Dolan hire": He's charismatic and constantly in the news. He's also an egomaniac who fired respected assistants in the middle of the season, and became so toxic to management that he was replaced by...Steve Kerr. He's also an iso-ball fetishist straight out of the Mike Woodson school. In other words, he'd be the ideal old Knicks candidate. He's the ideal choice for Stephen A. Smith...which should tell you all you need to know.

Honestly, I'm all for the idea that seemed to drive the Kerr hire -- that Jackson wanted a coach he knew, and could work with. That kind of synergy of basketball philosophy between the coach and front office is crucial, and something the franchise has lacked for years. The only thing that the old regime had in common was the fact that all the key decision-makers were represented by the shadowy MSG puppet-master agency CAA, which led to the Andrea Bargnani trade (CAA client) and the Chris Smith fiasco (ditto).

But Jackson mustn't get too locked into whole "inner circle" thing and make the mistake of hiring a crusty old retread like Kurt Rambis, who was a disaster with the Timberwolves. Gentleman Wolves blogger Steve McPherson was even kind enough to say that he wouldn't wish Rambis on Knicks fans:

I want to want Rambis to coach the Knicks because I love to hate, but I have too many Knicks fan friends to actually wish it.

— Steve McPherson (@steventurous) May 15, 2014

The world of the Triangle isn't that small. There are plenty of good coaches out there who have at least played in a Triangle Offense (Fred Hoiberg and Tyronn Lue come to mind). Let's take our time, and cast a wide net for once. It might be painful to watch at times -- Mike Dunleavy? Scottie Pippen? -- but a wide-ranging coaching search may be exactly what this team needs right now.

Fortunately, Jackson seems like a man who has that quality to Knicks have so often lacked: patience. He expressed a willingness to take his time in hiring a coach, according to Frank Isola:

"Hiring a coach I don’t think’s important with a timetable," Jackson said in April. "We’d really like to have a coach in our summer-league camp, or our summer-league games out in Las Vegas in July. That is important to us.

Sounds good to me. If Jackson wants to wait until after the Thunder are eliminated to interview Derek Fisher, then so be it. If he wants to interview several candidates, then all the better. That's what smart franchises do. That's what adults do.

Losing Kerr stings, but if this minor setback forces the Knicks to do the mature thing for once, and find a good coach in the process, then the organization will be better for it.
